Your website took plenty of time, effort and energy to build and launch — not to mention money and resources.

The idea of a redesign is understandably a worrying one. But before you dismiss the thought, let’s run through 5 simple questions together…

1. Is your website fully mobile-optimised?
It might sound obvious by now, but it’s still a serious consideration. ‘Mobile first’ is well and truly here, and it’s worth really thinking about how your users are engaging with your content on smaller screens. This one’s key.

2. How quickly does your website perform?
Your customers expect rapid loading times, and browsing at lightning speed is now the norm. If your website isn’t keeping up, they’ll simply head elsewhere.

Let’s look at the stats:

  • 47% of people expect a site to load in less than 2 seconds.
  • 40% will abandon it entirely if it takes longer than 3 seconds.
  • 85% of internet users expect a mobile site to load as fast as, or faster than, their desktop experience.

It’s not just your conversion rate that suffers from a slow website — it affects your Google search ranking too. Google itself says it’s “striving to make the whole web fast”, and will reduce the number of crawlers it sends to your site if your server takes longer than two seconds to respond.

3. How’s the bounce rate looking?
As part of your ongoing marketing efforts, you should be keeping an eye on your bounce rate.

A lower bounce rate indicates your website is performing well and giving its audience the content they’re after.
A higher bounce rate suggests the content and user experience need some attention. Are you keeping track of this?

4. How are you ranking in Google?
As well as fast loading times and a mobile-first website, Google crawls the internet for relevant keywords and links to and from other sites within your content. Basic SEO setup — correct titles, page labelling and descriptions — is vital to achieving Google success.

5. Most importantly, is your website converting?
This is one of the most important questions you can ask yourself: ‘Is my website actually working?’

  • Are website hits converting into leads or sales for your business or organisation?
  • Do you have the right ‘calls to action’ that encourage your users to engage?
  • Are you using Google Analytics or other tracking tools to work out where to display key messaging?
  • Are your forms automatically populating a CRM or kicking off a sales funnel?

These small tasks can hugely increase your website’s performance very quickly and are vital to your online success.
