Diamond Jewelry United is a UK-based online jeweller specialising in naturally-mined and lab-grown diamond jewellery. The business is run by Steven Grunhut, a third-generation diamond jeweller who’s built a reputation on quality stones at prices well below the typical retail mark-up. Their promise is straightforward: conflict-free diamonds, a lifetime guarantee, and prices up to 80% less than RRP. They also sell through an eBay store, but the website is their main source of traffic and revenue.
That promise depends on trust. For an online jeweller, trust starts the moment someone lands on the site. A slow page, a clunky layout, a store that feels dated — all of that chips away at confidence before a customer even sees the jewellery.
The problem
Diamond Jewelry United’s existing WooCommerce site was built with Visual Composer, a drag-and-drop page builder. Page builders are convenient for assembling layouts quickly, but they come at a cost. Every page carried extra code the builder needed to render its drag-and-drop elements, code that had nothing to do with what the customer actually saw.
The effect was slow load times across the store. For a jewellery retailer, where customers are already weighing a significant purchase, every extra second of loading is a reason to hesitate, and a reason to leave. Slow pages meant lost revenue, plain and simple.
The solution
The site was rebuilt from the ground up, with the same WooCommerce foundation, no page builder.
- Custom templates with ACF. Each page was rebuilt using Advanced Custom Fields and flexible content blocks, built specifically for what that page needed, nothing more.
- Dedicated managed infrastructure. The site moved to a managed VPS running on Linode Cloud, properly configured, and specific to the store’s needs rather than shared hosting built for everyone and no one.
- Offloaded static content. Images and static assets moved to Amazon S3, taking that load off the main server entirely.
- Database caching with Redis. Redis caching sat in front of the database, cutting down the repeated queries that were slowing pages down.
None of this changed what the customer sees: the collection, the pricing, the brand. It changed what happens behind the scenes to get that page in front of them quickly.
Results
The store is now more responsive than it’s ever been. Pages that used to drag now load the way a jewellery store should: quickly, cleanly, without the customer noticing the technology at all. And that speed has translated into more leads for the business.
Conclusion
Diamond Jewelry United’s refresh wasn’t about a new look. It was about stripping out what was slowing the business down and replacing it with infrastructure built to handle real customers making real decisions. Same store, same collection, properly built foundations underneath.
The relationship continues: ongoing hosting, monitoring, and support on the same infrastructure I set up. Same person, start to finish.
